500 Taliban Militants Escaped From Afghan Jail 

Kabul, April 26, 2011

More than 500 Taliban, members of militant Islamic organization escaped from the Kandhar jail in southern Afghanistan on Monday night by digging an underground tunnel reported to be hundred meters, news report said.

General Ghulam Dastageer Mayar said on Tuesday “A tunnel hundreds of meters long was dug from the south of the prison into the prison and 476 political prisoners escaped last night,”

Yusuf Ahmadi, a Taliban spokesman said that the Islamists militants were responsible for the great escape. He further said “Prisoners dug a 360-metre-long tunnel to the south of the prison.”  “They started getting out of the prison at 11:00 pm (1830 GMT) last night and by early morning today, 541 prisoners escaped the prison,”

The chief of Kandahar police, Shair Shah Yusufzai, confirmed the escape and said: “Last night some political prisoners broke out of the prison and have escaped.”
